The Golden Visa is a renewable long-term residence permit, typically valid for 10 years. Everything else follows from understanding that definition.
Three common misconceptions
- It is not citizenship. It is residence, renewable on expiry. UAE naturalisation is a separate and highly restricted process.
- It does not confer automatic tax exemption. Tax residency is assessed under its own criteria, including days present and centre of economic interest. Holding a residence visa is one input, not the conclusion.
- Registering a company does not automatically qualify you. Most shareholders receive an investor visa, typically valid for 2 years. Treat any offer bundling a Golden Visa into a setup package with caution.
The main qualifying routes
- Property investment - purchase above the prescribed threshold, commonly AED 2 million. Rules on mortgaged property vary by emirate.
- Investors and entrepreneurs - qualifying investment scale, or an approved venture with an accredited incubator or authority endorsement.
- Specialised talent - doctors, scientists, engineers, creatives and athletes, subject to certification, salary or recognition criteria.
- Outstanding students and graduates - meeting defined academic standards.
Criteria are revised periodically and implementation differs between emirates. Verify any specific threshold against current official requirements rather than a guide written two years ago.
Most founders only need an investor visa
If what you actually need is legal residence, an Emirates ID, personal and corporate bank accounts, and residence for your family, an investor visa delivers all of it at substantially lower cost.
The Golden Visa adds a longer term and independence from company sponsorship. Whether that justifies the difference depends on your plans, not on how it is marketed.
Practical notes on applying
- Supporting documents are verified rigorously. Misrepresentation jeopardises every future application.
- The medical test and biometrics must be completed inside the UAE.
- Dependants can be included, with attested marriage and birth certificates.
- Extended absence from the UAE can affect validity, with rules varying by visa type.
